Norwegian citizens have nervously been pulled into the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as an American aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R Ford (photo above), arrived off of the shores of Oslo recently.
This ship, which is the largest military ship that has ever been built and runs on nuclear power, carries approximately 4,500 military crew. This single ship is approximately the size of 1/4 of the entire Norwegian military. In total, all Norwegian Army, Navy, Air Force, Home Guard, and Special Operations Command includes approximately 15,000 personnel.
The USS Gerald R. Ford is not the first U.S. military presence in Norway. The U.S. also has a permanent military base in Stavanger, on the southwestern coast of the country, although that base holds only 275 U.S. military personnel and associated civilians.
Norway, like the United States, is a member of NATO, the military alliance that was formed in 1949, as an agreement after World War II for countries to defend each other if one member would be invaded. Most of Europe is in NATO, primarily as protection against Russia.
Norway shares a small section of border with Russia, north of the Arctic Circle, although Russia has not shown any interest in invading Norway.
