Let's discuss the Oscars nominees.
* I don't want to get into "The Artist." Read my previous post for that. NEXT--
*...speaking of French contributions to American movies, what is with the obsession with "Midnight in Paris"? I couldn't get through it.
* ...speaking of issues that don't make sense, why are they doing 9 "Best Picture" nominations, instead of 2 different categories for comedy and for drama?
* Despite my innermost desires for Rooney Mara to win for "Dragon Tattoo," the "Best Actress" award will probably be Viola Davis, right? Whatever. The issue at hand is the snub of Kirsten Dunst, for her role in "Melancholia." It was a mind-numbingly boring movie, but damn she was amazing. SNUBBED. If Jonah Hill can land a nomination from the Academy for anything he has ever done, certainly Kirsten Dunst is worthy.
* I think Melissa McCarthy is hilarious but she was nominated for the same role she always plays. Discuss.
Hmm. I just complained about five things. That's enough.
The dog should win every Oscar.

And George Clooney has certainly made a career for himself over the past few years. He's become the award show darling - sitting front row, camera always panning to him, everyone practically bowing to him. If he's not careful, he's gonna end up Hollywood's new Jack Nicholson (which by the way makes me wonder, where's Jack been?)

I'd love for Viola Davis to win Best Actress, but it's going to go to Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady. I'm not saying that because I want it to happen, but she is Meryl...

I agree with most of what you said except I have a quibble about Melissa McCarthy. The role in Bridesmaids was a total departure from what she's ever done. Yeah, she's played wise-cracking sidekicks in various TV shows but not as "butch" and raunchy as the character for which she's nominated. So I disagree with what you wrote about "same role." She was pretty much the best thing about the movie. And totally deserves a nom and possible win.

I don't get why they couldn't put in a comedy/musical category either. That doesn't make sense to me. And I disagree about Melissa, too. She was the best part of the movie and doesn't usually play a crazy butch - so I agree with David. Whether she wins or not, she at least deserves recognition for it. I prefer the Golden Globes anyway - most of the categories of the Oscars are a snooze and I past forward through them anyhow.

oh please, I usually make it thru an hour of that numbingly bad show and fall asleep but I tune in anyway. The academy will never change, just die out and hopefully get replaced with some young-uns. I'm with Diane, the bulk of the show is Who? What? No one cares who wins best sound effects or short documentary film and it's at least 2 hours of slogging thru that crap. Jack Nicholson has wisely unofficially retired, like Gene Hackmann.

and of couse who ever does win best documentary short film always has the most awesome hang on every word acceptance speech of the night.

I will take a moment and agree with everyone else on Melissa McCarthy...
but I cannot discuss anything else until I get over my snit that Alan Rickman did not get nominated for Severus Snape. And please.. they had room for one more nomination. They couldn't have nominated Deathly Hallows P2?
The Academy had that fiasco of a hosting job last year b/c they wanted to "appeal to the younger crowd".
Nominate HP and Alan Rickman, have some of the cast present (Get JK Rowling herself to stand up there and do the presenting of the HP film) and people would have tuned in.

True, Alan Rickman (or Ralph Finnes) were robbed of a nomination, in lieu of Nick Nolte??? Puh-leese.

I LOVED 'Midnight In Paris'. If that guy from 'The Artist' wins best actor I will be upset. It's a good film, but it's not the most amazing thing ever.
Kirsten Dunst & Tilda Swinton were robbed.

Yeh, what David said... Melissa will never impress me as much as she did on the tv show Samantha Who... Her comedic timing on that show was Classic...! I actually didn't care to see her so butchy in Bridesmaids... And the whole Molly character is pretty flat. I still adore her though...
