All though dinner, I kept thinking about watching "Downton Abbey."
We were at a lovely table, sitting on the water with massive ships sailing to and fro...and I've seen it before. The comings-and-goings of massive ocean vessels hold nothing in comparison to the musings of the Dowager Countess.
When I was in college, my friends were separated into two tribes: those who kept the fires burning for "Twin Peaks," and those who obsessed over "Melrose Place." I escaped the mania of both; I couldn't be tied down to such a time commitment. I avoided watching even a single episode of "Lost." "The Sopranos" was accessible on a temporary basis, should I decide to watch from time to time, even if I didn't understand who some of the characters were; but I refused to get sucked in.
Alas, "Downton Abbey" has done it. Not since my first foray into the world of "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 1 have I been so entirely engrossed in televised drama. The pomp! The circumstance! The house with all those servants! And nothing happens!! All they do is walk from room to room making snide comments about whomever is not there at the moment. Except the Dowager Countess, she makes rude comments preferably in the company of as many people she can offend as possible. And that is why I want to be her when I grow up, just a pile of old bones with a nasty attitude and a marvelous collection of hats.
I could've gone for drinks, but I bowed out. Instead, I rushed home with a doggie bag filled with extra dinner rolls (they are covered in rock salt, so delicious) and my night is planned. It's been a stressful week--in chemistry, we are learning about intermolecular forces and it's a rather unpleasant undertaking--so my dopamine receptors deserve an evening of positive stimulation. Bring on the carbs and the dry English scandal.
When I start drinking cocktails AND watching "Downton Abbey" on a Friday night, then I'll examine my priorities. If you'll excuse me, my salted dinner rolls await.

Best show ever (after Mad Men). :)
