Let's discuss Milk.
1) Before the 2008 movie, Harvey Milk's life was chronicled in a documentary that won the Academy Award in 1985. Two things stand out: first, a gay film winning an Oscar was a shocking accomplishment in the '80's. La Cage au Folles, the French predecesor to The Birdcage, was nominated for three Oscars in 1978 (Director, Costume Design, and Writing) but it didn't win. And that was a comedy, it was easier for audiences to accept.
