MY INNER BERNADINE
I know it's old news, but let's discuss Elliott Spitzer for a moment, if you don't mind.
Never mind the fact that he was having *unprotected* sex with prostitutes. It's anyone's guess as to what his relationship with his wife is like; perhaps they are no longer sexual with each other?...whatever.
Never mind the fact that he was *alledgedly* funneling government money into his own accounts to pay for these prostitutes. No one knows the situation exactly, the details will follow.
I'm just tired of the wives.
These wives, they stand by their husbands, like they've been brainwashed into believing it is their civic duty to support such wrongdoings, and be brave about it. His wife stands at press conferences, her hair perfectly coiffed, looking on like she supports him in whatever he does.
Did Hillary hurt her political future when she didn't divorce Bill?
Some say yes. Personally, I would respect her more had she left him. But I don't fault her for staying.
Just once--JUST ONCE--I want one of these guys to mess up, give the press conference, and then have the news cut to the helicopter over their house, which is filming the wife running around in her robe, screaming obscenities, throwing all the cheating dog's crap out onto the lawn and then lighting it on fire. I, for one, would be ridiculous about it. I wish he would cheat on me with a hooker. The American public can think what it wants, I would be pissed. And when he goes on that press conference, I would channel my inner Bernadine:
GET YO' SH*T, AND GET OUT!
That's the good stuff right there, bitches. That's real.

Bernadine! :)

yes bitches, that is some catharsis right there!
I would love for one of these women done wrong who gets paraded in front of the media for the admissions of wrongdoing by their husbands to bust out in the middle of it all and slap the crocodile tears & remorse of his stupid face. Just once.

is that a movie?? it looks like something I'd wanna see.

And when he goes on that press conference, I would channel my inner Bernadine...
That sentence cracked me up.

love that movie... (waiting to exhale, for those asking).
Posted by: meg | March 16, 2008 at 11:42 AM
I totally agree. I would not stand by my man if he was cheating on me. And if I was going to channel anyone it would be Left Eye and i would burn his house down!!!

There is some mutterance that after the press conference, Slida Spitzer (Ms. Spitzer if your nasty) walked doubly fast as him and pushed his arm off of hers as soon as they walked into the wings [curtains] after the press conference where he talked about how badly he felt for shaming his fam-ILL-lee.
I think for the most part that these wives are stepford wives. They are programmed what to say, think, and do. Hopefully the rumor about Silda pushing off her lecherous husbands falsely placed arm around her shoulder is true. Hopefully she has taken one small step for (politcal-wife) woman, and one BIG step for (political-wife) woman kind.

That is one of my favorite scenes from a movie! I agree with you 100%. I would absolutely pull a Bernadine too!

Today, Bernadine.
Tomorrow, Hillary?

At a certain point with prominent politicians, it seems like the marriage becomes a good-PR firm. The wife's job description includes standing by her man when his shenanigans are inevitably revealed to the public.

Me...I think I would walk out with him to the press conference and THEN lose it completely. Play it to the hilt. Why not?
Posted by: Suebob | March 16, 2008 at 07:28 PM
It IS trash!
Posted by: Bapril | March 17, 2008 at 05:50 AM
The major reason why I would not consider voting for Hilary is the fact that she stood by Bubba.
Posted by: MkeLaurie | March 17, 2008 at 08:50 AM
But for all the people who aren't voting for her because she stayed with Bill, there are more people who wouldn't vote for her had she left him. Can you imagine this country electing a divorced woman as President? No.
We live in such a sexist society. His affair is her detriment, either way.

well said Jill!!

No John, it'd help if YOU were white!
Posted by: Nilla | March 17, 2008 at 12:50 PM
Just a note, but of course Hillary didn't damage her political career by staying with Bill -- she saved it. She wants to be President, and America is still far too Puritan for a divorced President. Truthfully, I think the sympathy she got after the affair helped her earn the Senatorship as well; maybe it says something about our society that we need to see a powerful woman humiliated before we can allow her to succeed.
As for the rest of these wives, why they stand by their men, I don't know. It's probably for the kids. I could care less, it's up to them. I'm just sad that so many women seem to be in sexless marriages, seemingly of their own choice. Not to be crude, but are they not orgasmic? And why not? Women, liberate yourselves!

I think that a lot of woman of Mrs. Spitzer's social & political strata are indoctrinated into thinking that that appearances are more important than reality.
I too wish someone would have a REAL reaction to this. I think the wife would garner a lot more support and be an example to other women that this is happened to as well.

I agree with you. There is now way I would stand behind my man on national television while he tells the world he banged a hooker. If he were my man, I wouldn't be there, and he'd have 2 black eyes for his sweet little "I fucked a hooker" press conference.

Totally unrelated to this post, but absolutely the best line in this movie, or possibly ANY movie, for that matter:
"You raggedy BITCH! You better be more careful who you pick up in grocery stores next time!"
Posted by: Bapril | March 19, 2008 at 10:43 AM
For once I would like to see the news concentrating in the financial aspects and leaving our politicos life in the bedroom were it belongs in the bedroom instead of using it papparazzi stile to throw wool over our eyes. Besides that was it not a $1,000.00 and inch rate?

Probably she did push off his arm. well ,who can blame her.

I completely agree with your point of view and have been discussing this topic with some friends of mine. One friend brought to my attention that possibly, since these men are political figures and thusly need to maintain a certain appearance (even if they are cheating losers), that they may have something in their prenuptial agreements about the women having to stand with them and smile should something happen to make their career go sour. (sorry for the long sentence) Also, I heard somewhere that Spitzer's press conference started a couple hours late because Silda couldn't stop crying before hand. As much as I would love to see these women take a stand against their cheating husbands, there may be much more behind-the-scenes "stuff" going on.

There is way too much money involved here. Eliot Spitzer is a bajillionaire; if she stays, his wife stands to get an eff-load more money than if she leaves.
Just sayin'.
